Introducing: Scenery from Arcadia

Versatility is key when it comes to seating areas within today’s commercial interiors, as they often need to accommodate the varying ways in which people come together. Scenery is a collection of lounge and modular seating that offers one-of-a kind elements for not only taking these interactions to the next level, but also allowing them to happen at the same time.

To achieve such functionality, Scenery is uniquely designed with an upholstered ledge that is structurally incorporated as an extension of the seatback. The addition of this horizontal plane creates the perfect spot from which to perch and the span also allows space for ancillary seating to be positioned along the outside perimeter for optimizing all surfaces. Such innovation allows multiple and varied connections to occur at a moment’s notice and sets the scene for ideas to flourish.

Designed by David Ritch and Mark Saffell of 5D Studio, the concept was inspired by familiar behaviors that happen in the home environment. The core idea was to use the top of the backrest as a seating surface, very much like what happens when you entertain. The sofa becomes the focal hub where people gather and guests can be found seated facing each other while others are perched on the backrest chatting to those standing. This notion, that a piece of furniture could be utilized from all sides, became the impetus for this series.

By inviting users to engage with each other in these more casual ways, whether they’re working alone side-by-side, collaborating with others, or simply socializing, Scenery becomes that welcoming place people gravitate towards. And, with its ability to fashion any number of small or large-scale configurations to accommodate a variety of purposes, the possibilities are endless.

Modular arrangements are comprised of armless lounge, love seat, and sofa models, either with or without the ledge feature, together with corner units and benches in multiple sizes. A suspended wood bridge option, used in tandem with upholstered ledge models, provides a supplementary work surface while also enabling comfortable seating to occur in both directions, with legs facing inward or placed outward though the opening for more playful exchanges. Offered in ash and walnut veneer with a solid wood edge, or post-formed laminate, it creates a striking visual either way it is approached.

For more traditional lounge environments, Scenery is also offered in stand-alone styles, furthering its range of options and addressing design continuity throughout spaces. All models feature signature die-cast aluminum legs, in both standard and premium finishes, and can be specified with assorted power units to support digital activities both necessary, as well as of the more leisurely kind. Additionally, placement choices guarantee ease of accessibility and maximum functionality.

“We were immediately drawn to this design as it was something we had yet to really see in the marketplace,” states Tammie Alciatore, Director of Marketing. “The key was figuring out how to make the ledge structurally sound, while still incorporating comfort and flexibility. It’s these kinds of challenges that help push our manufacturing expertise to the next level and the end result was even better than we could have imagined.”

Whether specified with the upholstered ledge, a wood bridge, or as a traditional lounge or modular seating, Scenery offers no shortage of possibilities for becoming the ultimate focal point where communication, socialization, and productivity thrive.
